KCLMS is looking to recruit alumni for some exciting paid mentoring roles in partnership with the Mathematics education charity Axiom Maths for 2-3 hours per week after school during term time. The pay will be £11.95 an hour.

Each week, mentors will work with their Maths Circle of up to six KS3 students for one hour either online or in-person to deliver the Axiom curriculum through a series of carefully designed sessions. The programme, which supports students from all backgrounds, aims to broaden their mathematical thinking and expand their curiosity.

The mentor’s role is to encourage participants to think and express themselves mathematically as they work through the different problems – not giving solutions to problems but gentle probing to elicit ideas from the students. In addition to delivering their sessions, mentors are expected to spend an additional 30 minutes each week preparing for their Maths Circle by attempting the problems and reviewing Axiom training videos. We also ask you to complete a reflection after each session.

If you enjoy maths problem solving and are keen to cultivate this capability in others, this could be the perfect opportunity. Being a mentor is a fantastic way to nurture your leadership, organisational and communication skills. You’ll also be investing back into KCLMS and supporting our Widening Participation and Outreach efforts.

Maths Circle Alumni Mentors will be supported by KCLMS teachers who will provide training, resources, feedback, and encouragement. Sessions with students will include a mixture of group and independent work and will aim to engage them as they follow a carefully sequenced and structured curriculum.

***The start date will be January 2025; however, we have some potential vacancies beforehand. Please apply ASAP if you are interested in a pre-January start.***
